Cypriot Skype friend helps catch UK burglar.

A BRITISH burglar was caught red-handed in a UK home by a Cypriot man who was thousands of miles away watching the scene through Skype.

Ricky Elliott crept into Effrosyni Leventi's bedroom in Sunderland while she was in the kitchen, Metro Online reported.

It said that the 35-year-old woman did not realise was that her friend in Cyprus, Asterios Kokkinis, was watching him via Skype.

"He saw the defendant enter the room, search through her possessions and had the presence of mind at that stage to take some still photographs of what he was observing," prosecutor Paul Rowland told Newcastle crown court.

Elliott, who was packing Leventi's laptop into a bag, fled when she came back into the living room of her student digs.

Kokkinis, who had been waiting for his friend to resume their face-to-face internet chat, then downloaded the data for Leventi to take to the police.

Elliott, from Sunderland, who had 142 previous convictions, was arrested shortly after the February 18 burglary.

Jailing him for two years and five months, Judge Brian Forster said: "This court has to reflect the view of the public and parliament that homes will be protected."
