Cutting 100th birthday cake.

SUSAN Munday (nee Collings), from Bedworth, saw a picture of herself in a previous article we ran on Hawkesbury School.

She said: "I was the little girl in the photo cutting the cake for the 100th year anniversary of Hawkesbury School in 1962.

"My mum still has a copy of it. I can vaguely remember it as I was about seven at the time.

We all received a small new testament Bible for the occasion. In the photo I recognise a few of the children. In a previous letter to you Marian Beddows asked about our headmistress Miss Kenning. Unfortunately she died nine or 10 years ago.

"I have very fond memories of the school. I can remember using slate and chalk and learning to knit. Also I can remember all the little bottles of milk lined up around the large heaters, thawing in the icy weather. I hated warm milk!

By today's standards the conditions were unsatisfactory but we were taught well and had a great time. We were like a little family, and it was a sad day when the school was no more.] * THE article also prompted a response from Fred Ellis who says: "Seventy-five years ago I was a choir boy at Hawkesbury Church in Lentons Lane and lived in the lane for many years.

"The choirmaster was Bill Hall and the lay preacher was Mr Barnes. Rev Standing from St Thomas's Church, Longford, preached at Hawkesbury too. I have a lovely picture of the church."
