Cut military spending.

* Thanks for Jerry Filteau's "After debt ceiling crisis, real work on US social policy lies ahead" (NCR, Aug. 19). I'm grateful the bishops are calling for "shared sacrifice by all"--through the appropriate word would be "proportionate."

It is shocking to read the statistics from the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, which makes us one of the most unequal countries in the world.

No discussion of our economy is complete unless our bloated military and defense budget is at the center. In fact, we are spending half our resources (and more) on war spending, weapons of mass destruction, military bases, weapons research and maintenance. We can't afford it! Not only are we endangering our planet, people across the world, and our environment, but the military budget is supported on the backs of the poor.

It's time Catholics and people of conscience connect the dots and demand a real "new deal." War works are unpatriotic and immoral.
