Cut claims or get sack, staff told; BENEFITS.

JOBCENTRE staff have been ordered to place more people on tougher benefit regimes or face disciplinary action, it emerged last night.

The Government has now launched an inquiry after a leaked email revealed that staff had been set targets and shown league tables on sanctioning claimants.

Shadow Work Secretary Liam Byrne said: "This must be stopped now."

Jobs minister Mark Hoban told MPs this week: "There are no league tables. We don't set targets for sanctions."

But the email showed that Jobcentre staff in Walthamstow, North East London, faced disciplinary action if they did not rise up the league table. The Department for Work and Pensions said "if a manager has set a local target for applying sanctions this is against our policy".
