Culturelle Kids probiotic debuts.

CROMWELL, Conn. -- Culturelle recently announced an addition to its line of products for children with occasional digestive troubles or difficulty staying regular. Culturelle Kids Regularity Gentle-Go is a new probiotic for children designed to address regularity issues.

The product combines the most clinically studied "good" bacteria, Lactobacillus, with dietary fiber sourced from kiwi and chicory root, the i-Health Inc. brand announced early this month.

Sugar-, dairy- and gluten-free Kids Regularity Gentle-Go formula comes in a flavorless packet, enabling parents to mix it into a child's cold or room-temperature snack or beverage, Culturelle said. Each packet of Kids Regularity Gentle-Go contains 2.5 billion active cultures of Lactobacillus GG and 3.5 grams of dietary fiber to restore the natural balance of gut bacteria in the digestive tract and promote daily regularity, according to the company, which cited a recent study in which more than 60% of U.S. mothers with young children indicated concern about the physical and emotional issues of occasional regularity in their children.

Culturelle Kids Regularity Gentle-Go has a suggested retail price of $26.49 and is sold at major retailers nationwide, including CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Rite Aid Corp., Walmart and Target Corp.

A recent review study from the United Kingdom suggested that children whose tummies hurt for no clear reason could benefit from taking probiotics. Researchers analyzed information from nine studies involving about 700 children between the ages of 4 and 18 who had functional abdominal pain, or stomach pain that doesn't have a clear cause. While there is no standard treatment for the condition, which can cause persistent or intermittent symptoms for weeks, the recent research reports suggested probiotics might help.

Children who received probiotics experienced about a two-thirds reduction in their pain and had fewer episodes of pain compared with children who were administered a placebo.
