Culture and meaning in health services research; a practical field guide.

Culture and meaning in health services research; a practical field guide.

Sobo, Elisa Janine.

Left Coast Press

334 pages

This book offers a practical guide to applying interpretive qualitative methods to health care delivery problems, and promotes an anthropologically informed approach to applied health research. Sobo, an anthropologist who has worked in various health care settings, introduces the field of medical anthropology, then takes readers behind the scenes in the world of health services research, arguing that qualitative methods hold much promise for health services research. She explains the practice of ethnography and guides the reader through specific methods that can be used in focus groups and interviewing, and also considers the social relationship and power dynamics that influence field entry, data ownership, research deliverables, and authorship decisions. Case histories of anthropological and health services research show how anthropologically informed methods can be used for clinical practice. The book is for medical anthropologists who intend to work in clinical settings, and for non-anthropologists employed to conduct fieldwork in healthcare contexts. It is also appropriate for graduate students in medical anthropology. It can be used in courses in public health and health administration, nursing, anthropology, health psychology, and sociology.
