A new online project to encourage interest in traditional games such as 'It' and 'Hide & Seek' has been announced by Culture Online, part of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
Playground Fun is a website to be launched this month by Culture Online at http://www.playgroundfun.org.uk. The site is said to provide information on practical ways to encourage 7-9 year olds to learn and play together, both at home and at school. Playground Fun will feature cartoon characters, games from other cultures and countries and a game builder tool and encourage children to share their favourite games online.
The Playground Fun website has been piloted in a number of schools and each has reported an improvement in playground behaviour and social interaction. The site is said to provide lesson plans and materials for teachers and notes for parents to ensure children remain fit and safe as well as entertained.
