Culture Minister Presents Returned Orpheus Mosaic.
The Dallas Museum of Art returned the Orpheus Mosaic after learning that the piece was likely looted from an archaeological site in Turkey.
The Orpheus Mosaic is known as the earliest Edessa mosaic that archaeologists have dated so far. The piece dates from A.D. 194 and measures approximately 64 inches by 60 inches (163 by 152 centimeters). It was part of a floor in a Roman building.
Edessa is the Hellenistic name given to E[currency]anlyurfa. The mosaic was taken abroad by smugglers in 1998 after its discovery by J.B. Segal in 1950 in E[currency]anlyurfa. (Cihan/Todays Zaman)
