Crumpets on test.
Loved by Us Six Crumpets, Co-op, 79p | Golden brown to start with and toasted well top and bottom but stayed fluffy in the middle. Traditional round shape with good size holes for the butter and jam to soak into and tasted delicious.
OOZE FACTOR: Soaked up the butter like a sponge SCORE: 5/5 Kingsmill 6 Christmas Tree Crumpets, Aldi, 89p | Fun, festive looking crumpets but they were on the small size and difficult to spread. The shape meant the corners got burnt in the toaster so they were crisp on the edges but soggy in the middle. OOZE FACTOR: Holes too small to allow butter to seep through SCORE: 2/5 Warburtons 2 Giant Crumpets, Iceland, 69p or two for PS1 | Too big for the toaster but browned well under the grill, even though they were pale to start with. Crispy top and bottom and soft on the inside but heavy going and a meal rather than a snack.
OOZE FACTOR: The butter didn't reach the bottom so on the dry side SCORE: 3.5/5 Genius Gluten Free 4 Crumpets, Morrisons, PS1.70 | A bit of a scary yellow colour to begin with but cooked evenly to a more golden colour. Not our favourite taste without the gluten but we are sure they are good if you suffer with an intolerance.
OOZE FACTOR: Butter found its way all the way through SCORE: 4/5 Kingsmill 6 Square Crumpets, Tesco, PS1 | Cooked to perfection in the toaster as slightly thinner than traditional crumpets - good crispy top and side with a nice squishy centre. Be wary of having toaster on too high as corners will burn. OOZE FACTOR: Lovely trickle of butter right to the bottom SCORE: 4/5
