Cross-strait economic cooperation committee comes into being.

Taipei, Jan. 7, 2011 (CENS)-Coss-Taiwan Strait Economic Cooperation Committee came into being yesterday (Jan. 6), with the mission of assuring smooth implementation of cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) and overseeing subsequent talks on further cross-Strait cooperation.

The committee will be headed jointly by Kao Koong-lian, vice chairman of Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), and his Chinese counterpart Zheng Lizhong, vice chairman of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), in the capacity of co-convener. Liang Kuo-hsin, vice economics minister, and Jiang Zengwei, vice minister of the Ministry of Commerce of China, will both serve as the chief representative. There are also 13 representatives, all economic and trade officials from both sides.

The committee is scheduled to convene its meeting after the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, with the agenda including cross-Strait investment protection agreement, merchandise trade, service trade, and the mutual establishment of semi-official economic and trade offices. Meeting of the committee will take place in Taiwan and China alternatively.

The committee will handle primarily the technical aspects of cross-Strait issues, rather than the policy aspect which is still in the direct jurisdiction of SEF and ARATS.
