The author presents an exciting theory and technique for critical analysis of works of art. His message is especially powerful in that it is grounded on effective classroom-tested practices. The objectives of this monograph are to present a brief history of the transformation of aesthetics into the three areas of art doctrine, art history and art criticism; to relate historical and theoretical data to the manner in which art criticism has been approached in art education; and to present examples of art lessons that use critical theories and models.

The monograph identifies instructional practices in art criticism that are based upon historical developments in aesthetics. Part One develops a context to the research problems of this monograph. Part Two is an overview of major developments in the history and theory of art criticism. Part Three presents major aesthetic schemes and criticism models in art education, and Part Four presents sample units of subject-centered lessons that demonstrate these schemes and models. And it is teacher friendly!
