Crime-inspired art at sculpture park; Sculpture.
Taking place in the Underground Gallery and the open air, The Sovereign Forest + Other Stories features film, projected images and ethereal displays of organic materials.
Amar Kanwar's multimedia works are inspired by crime, politics and the natural world. With a focus on the impact of mining on communities in India, the exhibition has a particular resonance at the park, which is situated on the Yorkshire coalfield and ringed by former mining towns.
| ARTIST: Kanwar Picture by The exhibition debuts a new commission especially for YSP. The Listening Benches in the Bothy Garden are recycled from the timber of the 19th century organ formerly housed in the YSP Chapel and are Kanwar's first sculptural objects for the open air.
Overlooking the Bretton Estate and coalfields beyond, the benches offer visitors an interactive audio experience and a place for pause and contemplation.
YSP's Director of Programme Clare Lilley said: "Amar Kanwar is a very compelling story-teller. He shares complex but personal stories using moving images and objects, such as handmade books with texts silk-screened on to banana-fibre paper; all presented in a way that has the ability to draw you in and move you.
"We are especially pleased that an international artist of Amar's standing has chosen to make his first outdoor objects for YSP, using wood taken from our dismantled chapel organ and giving it a new life."
Amar " A programme of associated events for all ages accompanies the exhibition, including a talk and book signing on November 14 with actor, presenter and explorer Michael Palin, who hasJonty Wilde travelled extensively in the region of India that has inspired much of Kanwar's work.
There will also be a special event to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the miners' strike, to mark the historical and continued impact of mining internationally and nationally. ? Amar Kanwar: The Sovereign Forest + Other Stories runs from October 12 to February 2, 2014. Visit ysp.co.uk for further details.
