CRIMINOLOGISTS from all over the country are to descend on Huddersfield for a major conference.

The university's Applied Criminology Centre will host the 2008 conference of the British Society of Criminology from July 8 to 11.

This event is the major forum for criminologists in the United Kingdom and arouTopicalnd 500 delegates are expected, with some travelling from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

More than 350 papers will be presented, covering aspects of criminology such as crime prevention, policing, prisons, surveillance, anti-social behaviour and counter terrorism. There will even be discussions on crimes against the environment.

Speakers will be talking about how research can be used practically to prevent and reduce crime.

Professor Alex Hirschfield, director of the ACC atHuddersfield, said: "This is a tremendous opportunity to raise the profile of the university and that of Huddersfield. Criminology is such a topical subject that there is hardly a day that goes by when it is not the lead story on TV or in newspaper headlines.

"That's all the more reason to be objective about what's going on. Criminology can keep our feet firmly on the ground when it comes to crime."

Local companies will also get chance to promote publications and products relating to criminology at the event. Any businesses interested in sponsoring the conference can email criminologyconference2008@hud.ac.uk
