Cricket star: Call time on leather balls.
Byline: LUCY THORNTON
A VEGAN cricket star has called for the sport to end its use of leather balls.
Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie wants the sport to be "cruelty free" and said synthetics balls could also help speed up the game. His concerns were backed by umpire legend Dickie Bird.
Gillespie has also upset club sponsor Wensleydale Creamery by branding the dairy industry "disgusting".
Aussie Gillespie, once a fearsome fast bowler, added: "I hope one day the dairy industry can be shut down."
The dad-of-five, 41, became a vegan after his father Neil's death from a heart attack three years ago.
He said he began researching nutrition and concluded "we treat animals like s**t".
A Wensleydale spokeswoman said: "Our milk comes from farms with very high standards of welfare."
