Cricket: Wallasey cup bid on track.

WALLASEY might be struggling for consistency in league cricket, but they are enjoying success in the limited overs game.

In fact, they are the only club definitely through to the quarter-finals of the Liverpool Echo Knockout.

Rain put paid to most games last week, but the Wirral side got the better of Chester Boughton Hall in a third round tie by four wickets.

Chester looked to be heading for a good total at 72-3 at the halfway stage, but they were pegged back, with Chris Bourne's 3-16 off five overs particularly good.

Darren Cruikshank (49) and Oliver Law (24) were their top scorers as they set 106-6 off their 20 overs.

The home side paced it well, with Charlie Boucher (32) and Richie Conlan (19) leading them home with five balls to spare at 107-6.

On Sunday, Wallasey overwhelmed Stockport in the Cheshire Knockout, with skipper John Pugh hitting form. Pugh (66), Conlan (55no) and Mark Wilkie (30) helped to boost the total to 211-7 off a reduced 35 overs.

The home side lost wickets regularly, with John Murphy taking 3-23 off seven, and they only mustered 152 off 33.1.

It's a busy week for Echo Knockout games with four matches being played on Thursday and two on Friday.

Southport, whose Echo game with Fleetwood Hesketh will be played on Thursday, July 10, suffered defeat on Sunday in a low scoring Cockspur National Knockout tie.

Fleetwood totalled 138, while Southport replied with 134.

Thursday: Echo Knockout (third round): St Helens Recs v Northern, Liverpool v Hightown, Birkenhead Park v Alder, Ormskirk v Wavertree.

Friday: Echo Knockout (third round): St Helens v Firwood Bootle, Sefton Park v Formby.

Firwood Bootle beat BAE/EE Preston in their bid for a fifth successive Lancashire Knockout title. Stephen Parry took 3-19 to restrict BAE/EE to 119-9 in their 45 overs.

Thanks to Jack Kelliher (66) and Ian Cockbain jun (34) Bootle took just 14.1 overs to win by eight wickets.
