Crewe Alex reaction: 'We can't feel sorry for ourselves' - David Artell; The manager gives his verdict to an away defeat.
Byline: Peter Morse
David Artell says the players have to pick themselves up and go again after Saturday's defeat to Cambridge.
They were beaten in the final game of 2017, but entertain Grimsby Town in on Monday (January 1).
The manager said: "If don't half give ourselves mountains to climb. They could have been out of sight. If you give any team a two-goal start you won't win many matches.
"They didn't have to work hard for their goals at all.
"It was unbelievable for the first. We had a throw in 20 yards from their goal line. You can't legilslate for that.
"We were in the ascendancy in the second half but we shoot ourselves in the foot. You can't legislate for it, they haven't had to work hard for their goals.
"We made (Uche) Ikpeazu look unbelievable. We made him look a handful, he looked brillaint but we've had him at Crewe so we know about him.
If you don't perform you get what you deserve. There wasn't much in the game after their start, but it was just basic defending that has cost us.
"We had chance after chance in the seciond half early on but we kept doing silly things.
"I've told them if you are going to feel sorry for yourselves going into Monday let me know, because you won't play. We're not in a position to do that.
"The players are in tomorrow (Sunday). There's no substitute for hard work."
