Credit is deserving.
But to some people, an increased income can make a great deal of difference.
When the Government wanted to find out if North East people were claiming the full Pension Tax Credits they were entitled to, it asked to do so through the Chronicle.
Now around pounds 1m of extra benefit will be paid out, such has been the success of the appeal.
A large number of people have now increased their income, many of whom were finding it difficult to make ends meet.
The cash could well mean elderly residents can now heat their houses more effectively or socialise in a way they could not do previously.
The initiative is a good example of how proactive government can make a real difference to people's lives.
It is doubly effective by targeting some of the most needy members of society. It may be there are further benefits which are still up for grabs.
It is clear that people who think they may qualify for financial help should contact the relevant department as soon as possible.
