Byline: Diana Louise Carter

Rochester Institute of Technology is bringing the creator the syndicated cartoon "Rubes" to campus for a week as part of its efforts to bring more creativity and innovation to its instruction.

Leigh Rubin, creator of "Rubes," will be the first cartoonist-in-residence at RIT. His work is published in more than 400 newspapers.

"This is quite an honor," Rubin told an RIT writer. "I'm really looking forward to this and think it will be a lot of fun."

During his time on campus, Rubin is scheduled to meet with students in RIT's College of Art and Design, School of Individualized Studies and College of Liberal Arts. Specifically, he'll visit classes in comics, art history, illustration, video game production and design. His discussions will also cover the business aspects of being a cartoonist, such as branding and working with publishers and projects.

Rubin will also meet with faculty across the university to talk about more creative and innovative teaching methods. A return visit in the spring is being planned to continue the work he'll begin.

James Winebrake, dean of RIT's College of Liberal Arts, said RIT is "extremely excited to have Leigh as our first university cartoonist-in-residence. Leigh's artistic talent, combined with his creative genius and professional knowledge, will create unbelievable opportunities for student learning and faculty interaction."

While Rubin is visiting, a pilot television show he co-created that explores creative jobs will be shown at RIT. "Drawing Inspiration" will have its East Coast premiere Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in RIT's Webb Auditorium. 363-7275
