Creamery strikes gold in top competition.

A CHEESE and milk producing company is reaping the rewards of competition.

As one of the UK's most successful farmer-owned co-operatives, South Caernarfon Creameries, at Chwilog near Pwllheli, feel the challenge helps them market their products.

Chief executive Richard Elmitt said: 'We are under continuous pressure from major multiples to compete in all prestigious cheese and dairy competitions across the country to endorse the fine quality products that we supply.

'In turn, it raises our company and product profile and enables us to capitalise on the opportunity by labelling our products as award winning.' Their cheddar was named as the best overall cheese at the Cheshire Show with the firm, which employs 175, also winning two golds, a silver and a bronze.

At the World Cheese Awards back in March, the company were awarded silver and bronze prizes.

The company received a special award for the best cheddar in class at the Royal Bath & West Show last month, plus three firsts were collected.

The Royal Welsh Show later in the month is the next big event for the creameries. It is also notable the company, in response to consumer demand, use animals fed on a diet of non-GM feed to produce all their milk
