Cracking the whip.
FULL marks to Glen Watson, director general of the Office for National Statistics, for neatly demolishing some racial stereotyping.
He was asked to produce figures for MPs giving an ethnic breakdown of burglaries. He did as he was told and revealed that last year 54,000 black people were victims, 816,000 white and so on. But in case racists drew some inaccurate conclusions about who was robbing who, Watson slipped in another, unasked for, table. This shows that Asian, Chinese and black households are twice as likely to be burgled than white ones.
It proves figures do not always hold the clues to the whole story. That's elementary, my dear Watson.
