Cracked wall leads to office evacuation.
A CITY centre building was evacuated after high winds caused a crack to appear in a wall. Tib Lane was closed off by police and fire crews rushed to the scene after the fracture appeared at the Orega Office just before midday on Thursday.
Officers at the scene said the building, which has a shop front on King Street, was evacuated after 'concerns were raised about the building's structure'.
A neighbouring building, which has a DKNY store on the ground floor and office space above, was evacuated after the structure started to lean against it, shop bosses said.
DKNY store manager Claire Murphy said: "At the back of our store there is a platform with a large glass skylight. If the wall had fallen the other way it would have crashed through the shop ceiling."
A spokesman for Manchester City Council said the crack appeared in a wall above a courtyard after a fence smashed into it in the high winds.
He said: "It is not a public safety issue. The building owner has been notified and will organise repair work."
Orega declined to comment.
