Courtofversailles, Ladjadj win again.

Tribune News Network DOHA Courtofversailles lived up to his high billing and took home the prestigious HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy, the crowning glory of the 16th Race Meeting at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club Racecourse on Thursday. On the grassy track, the five-year-old bay horse followed pace-setters Al Mohalhal (Marc Lerner) and Goldenfield (Vaclav Janacek) along with Ponfeigh (Faleh Bughanaim) and Otwo (Carlo Fiocchi). The same group nearly stayed together before the final bend. As the pace picked up on the home straight, Courtofversailles, ridden by Stephan Ladjadj, led the field and continued to pound down the course in determined manner. A frantic chase saw Zman Awal (Tomas Lukasek), defending champion The Blue Eye (Harry Bentley) and Fundamental (Theo Bachelot) come up. But it appeared that they ran out of time and space as they were caught up in the back traffic badly and could not time the sprint well. Courtofversailles however maintained his rhythm and managed to claim the race. Zman Awal's brave effort fell short by three-fourths of a length. The Blue Eye and Fundamental shared the third spot and Topsy Turvy(Saleem Golam) edged Cameraman (Marvin Suerland) to round out the top five in the QR 1-million race. Courtofversailles obliged the rider, owner Khalid Rashid al Mohannadi and trainer Rashid Mohammed al Jehani with the fourth victory in as many races. He followed up the Qatar Gold Trophy Gr 1 victory with Al Gharafa Cup in April this year and opened the new season with the triumph in the Barzan Cup (Gr 3) last month. Overall, it was an eighth victory for him and the last four of them with Ladjadj. He was expected to do better in the Emir's Shalfa race in February this year but was beaten narrowly by Altarsheed (Richard Mullen). Ladjadj earlier won the Ebraz Thoroughbred Handicap Class 4 1,600m with Geno when they defeated Could Be (Eduardo Pedroza) by two lengths. This was the first race of the season for the Khalid Hamad al Atteya-owned four-year-old bay gelding. For the ward of Mohammed Hamad al Attiya, this was the second win in Doha in five races after making the first appearance in March this year. Gerald Avranche and AJS Al Rayyan won the Jaafer Cup over 2,000m, another important event on the nine-race card. They held off Julian Smart-schooled Aaley Al Magam by a quarter length to post the first victory of the season in four runs. Overall, it was the fifth triumph for the six-year-old gray horse trainee of Hadi Nasser Rashid al Ramzani from Al Jeryan Stud. Rider Bachelot rode two HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Thani-owned mounts to victories in the first three races to give an exciting start to trainer Julian Smart. Anees, a three-year-old bay colt, had a poor debut last month with a 10th place out of 16 runners, more than made up for it in the Harran Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate Div 1 1,400m. Showing remarkable strength, he outsprinted Ameenah (Lukasek) by six lengths. Mosaab, a three-year-old gray colt, proved a strong rival for Dhay (Bughanaim) and Aziz'nafs, winning the Mared Al Sahra Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate 2,000m by two lengths. Jean Baptiste Hamel and Diese, a trainee of Alban de Mieulle, paired up to win the Reda Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate Div 2 1,400m. Saab Al Manal (Pierantonio Convertino) and Di Na Py (Bughanaim) could not challenge the Olivier Materne-owned four-year-old bay colt seriously. Diese, improving with each of his six races, went on to post his first win by over three lengths. In close finishes, Lukasek set up a one-length victory for AJS Anfowan over Raqee in the Djendel Local Purebred Arabian Graduate Plate, Convertino guided Stars N Angels past Hillside Dream (Bentley) by short head in the Assy Thoroughbred Class 4 for fillies and mares and the Gazwan Local Thoroughbre Conditions 1,400m was bagged by Mosayter (JP Guillambert) for Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari and trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali.
