Court continues to hear Balyoz coup plot trial appeals.

ySTANBUL (CyHAN)- The Supreme Court of Appeals continued to hear arguments on Tuesday from defense lawyers in the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) case of more than 300 military officers convicted of involvement in a failed plot to overthrow the government in 2003.

The court began hearing the defense's statements on Monday. The appeals sessions continued into its second day with the reading of a 400-page argument that was jointly prepared by 60 defense lawyers. Compared to the high number of attendees at Monday's session, there were not as many lawyers and spectators on Tuesday.

During the appeals session, Kazym Yiy-it Akalyn, the defense lawyer for Gen. Halil ybrahim Fyrtyna, accused the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TE[pounds sterling]ByTAK) of manipulating evidence, claiming that its report on the computer disks and flash memories included in the case's evidence file doesn't reflect reality.

A legal opinion was announced on June 17, 2013 by the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, in which it requested the 9th Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals to approve the prison sentence of 256 defendants and to reverse the penalties of 67 suspects.
