Court Masterpiece makes return to stud duties.

Byline: Martin Stevens

DUAL Group 1 winner Court Masterpiece has returned to stud duties after a brief spell back on the racecourse last year. The ten-year-old will stand at Norton Grove Stud in Malton, North Yorkshire, this season, having completed one season at stud in Ireland two years ago.

The son of Polish Precedent was trained by Ed Dunlop to win the Prix de la Foret and Sussex Stakes, and was retired to Woodlands Stud, County Galway, as a dual-purpose stallion for the 2008 season but reportedly experienced problems with fertility.

John Quinn trained him last year when his best effort was a close third to subsequent Haydock Sprint Cup winner Regal Parade in a 7f conditions race at York.

Norton Grove Stud owner Richard Lingwood said: "We're taking a bit of a gamble on Court Masterpiece to see if his fertility has improved. If any mare owners fancy taking a chance with him we'll be happy to talk to them, with the promise that if their mare is not tested in foal, we'll offer them a very good deal on one of our other stallions, either Bollin Eric or Monsieur Bond."

Lingwood also reported that Norton Grove stalwart Presidium died after suffering from a kidney infection at the end of November, a month shy of his 28th birthday.

A General Assembly half-brother to Diesis, Kris and Rudimentary, Presidium won five races from two to five, including the City of York Stakes, in which he broke the track record.

He had stood at Norton Grove Stud since 1994, and his best progeny were Group 3 Prix de Meautry scorer Andreyev and Grade 3 Kelso Handicap winner Mighty Forum.

His daughter Laurel Delight, a talented handicapper for Jack Berry, is the dam of dual Grade 2 winner Mr O'Brien and last year's unbeaten Futurity Stakes hero Cape Blanco, a leading fancy for the Classics. Presidium is also damsire of Diadem Stakes winner Pivotal Point.
