Byline: KATE MANSEY

A MAN and woman died instantly when their sports car left the road and careered into a lamp post yesterday.

The 38-year-old man and the woman, 28, were both from Runcorn, Cheshire.

The accident happened at 3. 38pm on Higher Road, Hale-wood, when the TVR Tuscan car hit the lamp post near Finch Lane.

A police spokesman said: ``The two people suffered seri-ous injuries which proved fatal at the scene of the collision. ''

Relatives of the deceased have been notified but have asked for the identities of the dead not to be disclosed yet.

The bodies were taken to Whiston Hospital and no other cars were involved in the crash.

Council officers were called out to assess the scene and the road was closed for several hours after the crash, reopening again late last night.

The road where the accident happened is in a secluded spot close to an RSPCA centre, and acts as a feeder road to Speke Boulevard.

Police have launched an investigation into what caused the crash.
