Couple carry on family's marriage tradition.

A TYNESIDE couple have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary - continuing a family tradition to boot.

Richard Heathcote, from Wallsend, met wife Doreen in 1957 while he was on national service at Bramley Army barracks in Hampshire. The couple tied the knot on June 7, 1958, in St Michael's Church in Doreen's hometown of Basingstoke, with Richard's sister Edna Powers the matron of honour and her husband Bruce the best man.

The couple settled down in Wallsend, raising a son and daughter. They now also have a grandson. Mr and Mrs Heathcote are now the fourth couple in their family to celebrate reaching the diamond wedding milestone. Edna and her husband Bruce celebrated their own diamond wedding anniversary in 2012.

Richard and Edna's parents Lauretta and Richard Heathcote marked their 60th wedding anniversary in April 1991, while Richard's parents Charles and Hannah Heathcote celebrated their diamond anniversary in April 1961.
