Couple's rare photo pieces uner the hammer.

A COLWYN Bay collector's rare pieces of photographic memorabilia are being auctioned today.

Jack Haley and his wife Winifred moved from Prestwich in Manchester to Colwyn Bay in 1958 for health reasons and opened a shop called J & W Haley Photographic Services in Abergele Road. They collected paraphernalia - including one early brass and mahogany instrument, the Kromskop (pronounced Chromescope), a pioneer of colour photography from 1897 and which ceased production by 1910.

Jack died in 1988 and now his family are selling his scientific instrument, slides and other items.

The Kromskop - there are two in the late Mr Haley's collection - is the rarest.

It was invented by Frederick Eugene Ives (1856-1937) one of the founders of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia and a pioneer in the field of colour photography.

The more valuable of the two in the sale comes complete with two boxes of equally rare photographic slides and an instruction booklet, together with the original receipt which shows it was purchased in 1930 from a Baker of London, price PS5. It is expected to sell for PS800-1,200 in the auction. The second, which is estimated at PS500-800, has no box and fewer slides.

In a Kromskop, three separate black-and-white photographs of a subject were taken through red, green and blue filters using special cameras. When viewed in Ives's Kromskop, red, green and blue filters and transparent reflectors caused the transparent positives of each of the three images to combine into one full-colour image.

Another rarity in the collection is a Kinora, an early motion picture device which operated like a child's picture flip book to give the idea of motion.
