Country music night for charity; Cancer Research UK Locharbriggs club to host event.

Byline: Stephen Temlett

A night of country music will raise money for Cancer Research UK later this year. On Friday November 9, the Locharbriggs Social Club in Dumfries will transform into a night of Nashville, Texas, Memphis and all things cowboy and cowgirl.

The event is the idea of Ali Donowho, the radio presenter of successful Country music show 'Country in My Veins'.

He said: "My world was rocked 21 years ago with the death of my mum, Jan, to cancer. She is still sorely missed and thought of everyday.

'I have the amazing fortune to be entertainment chairman for Dumfries and Galloway Relay for Life, raising much needed money for Cancer Research UK.

"Over the years I have been fortunate enough to be involved in many charity events for lots of different and deserving charities, this year it dawned on me that although my mum has always been my inspiration for helping others, I have never really done anything dedicated in memory to her.

"For me, having a country night themed event was an obvious choice."

Raising money for Cancer Research UK Relay for Life, the night will be filled with line dancing, country music and the inaugural appearance of specially formed band Lowdown Highway.

To date, relayers and supporters in the region have raised more than PS530,000 for Cancer Research UK's life saving work into finding cures for all types of cancer. This event looks to add to this already impressive total.

Lowdown Highway will be playing a mix of classic and contemporary country.

There will be entertainment in the form of a line dancing demo and the opportunity to join in with Audrey's SideSteppers.

As a warm up to the band, Gina Lawson - lead singer of Newton Stewart-based band Electric Velvet - has agreed to do a solo set of wellknown country classics.

There will also be a raffle, stand-up bingo, music and dancing throughout the night.
