COUNCILLORS have cut some of their own expenses.
They voted to scrap claims for 50% of their spend on travel, food and accommodation when attending their party's political conference.
The council members backed a motion by Green Party leader Clr Andrew Cooper, who said: "When I go round the country and talk to councillors from other councils they are always amazed that we pay for people to go to party conferences... rather than people or the party paying for it themselves.
"It isn't a large amount of money but it's a reputational issue and something I think we should stop doing, particularly at a time when we are cutting services all over the place."
The motion was submitted by Clr Cooper, his party and ward colleague Clr Karen Allison, plus independent councillor Terry Lyons.
It was seconded by Colne Valley Liberal Democrat Clr David Ridgway.
The motion backed called for the council to "cease the practice of funding the travel, accommodation and registration fees for councillors of Kirklees attending party political conferences."
Kirklees Council's official policy stated: "The head of Governance and Democratic Services has delegated powers to determine councillor attendance at conferences etc.
"For approved attendance at annual party and single-party conferences, the council will reimburse a councillor for all travel and 50% of subsistence costs if attendance is deemed part-development."
In 2014 the Conservative Party conference took place in Birmingham, Labour's was in Manchester, the Liberal Democrats met in Glasgow and the Green Party's was also in Birmingham.
