Council staff in fraud probe.

FIRMER action will be taken against council staff who commit benefit fraud after it emerged five employees in Wrexham have been under investigation.

Four cases have been proved and one is still in progress, an internal audit report reveals.

Another incident related to deliberate falsification of flexi time records and unauthorised use of council vehicles.

Tomorrow, members of Wrexham Council's audit committee will discuss the report findings between last April and August.

It also makes reference to an unnamed Wrexham school at the centre of an ongoing police and disciplinarary probe.

The document says: "The HR manager has now reviewed the council's disciplinary policy and procedures to strengthen the actions the council can take against staff who commit benefit fraud."

About the school investigation, the report adds: "The school cannot be identified as an ongoing police/disciplinary investigation is in progress. Weaknesses related to income received."
