Council puts noise bar on 'Beatles street' pubs.

PUBS at heart of Liverpool's famous musical heritage have been ordered to turn down the volume after residents complained about the noise.

A number of bars in Mathew Street have been served with notices by Liverpool City Council telling landlords to quieten down.

The move came after residents in new luxury flats above the bars in the street complained to environmental health chiefs about the noise. The order states bars must keep their doors and windows closed and soundproof the buildings.

A spokesman for the council said: "Flanagan's and Bar 34 have been served orders asking them to turn the music down or soundproof their premises.

"We have to serve the needs of residents and there is already a seminar planned for licensees to talk about the law surrounding noise.

"With more and more people living in the city centre it is a question of balance between residents and licensees."

But Mathew Street regular Antony Blundell, from Tuebrook, said the move was completely ridiculous.

He said: "You're talking about the most famous live music street in the world, which attracts tourists from across the globe. And now they are going to destroy the whole atmosphere by making them shut the windows and keep the music inside.

"One of the best things about Mathew Street is the music spilling out from the bars on to the streets.

That is what makes it so special.

"Surely anybody who moved into Mathew Street would realise that it wasn't going to be a quiet retreat."
