Cotton garment industry accord.

In late August.. negotiators for the Cotton Garment Manufacturers Association and the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union began contract talks to replace agreements that are scheduled to expire this year for some 38,000 workers nationwide. (Union members make men's shirts, trousers, and other cotton garments, or work in cotton garment distribution and retail centers in the South, and in Maine, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and other midAtlantic and Central States.)

The Association and the union recently reached agreement on a new 3year contract, covering the 14,000 workers involved in the initial negotiations. The settlement was expected to set a pattern for the additional 24,000 Clothing and Textile Workers-represented employees involved in the 1991 round of negotiations.

Terms of the agreement call for a 70cent-an-hour wage increase over the term of the contract (at the expiration of the prior agreement, workers reportedly were averaging $6.60 an hour); continuation of the company-paid health care plan with several enhancements, including a new vision care plan, the "beginning" of a prescription drug plan, and improvements in benefits for doctor visits in the office, home, and hospital; and a 25-cent increase (to $6.75) in the monthly pension rate per year of credited service.
