CHICAGO -- For students and faculty at Cortiva Institute -Chicago, Massage Therapy Awareness Week is an opportunity to educate the community about the benefits of massage therapy and to celebrate why they are so passionate about what they do.

Massage Therapy Awareness Week, as designated by the American Massage Therapy Association, will be held from October 24 to October 30th. To celebrate the weeklong event, Cortiva Institute-Chicago is offering a complimentary 10 minute tune up chair Massage from Monday through Friday 1-3 p.m. at its 17 North State Street, First Floor Building Lobby and Massage Therapy Center Lobby 18 North Wabash locations.

In addition, Cortiva is offering a 50 minute Student Massage for $30.00 at its three locations: Crystal Lake at 241 Commerce Drive, Crystal Lake; Chicago Loop at 18 N. Wabash Avenue; and Woodridge at 1051 Internationale Pkwy and a 60 minute Professional Massage for $60.00 at its Loop location.

According to Cortiva - Chicago campus president Paul Myer, Massage Therapy Awareness Week is "a wonderful occasion to educate the community about the benefits of professional massage therapy and about the programs we offer those interested in pursuing a career in the growing massage therapy industry."

The benefits of massage therapy are becoming more widely recognized. One recent study pointing to the considerable benefits of massage therapy was conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

The results of the study found that a single session of massage caused biological changes including significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol in blood and saliva, and in arginine vasopressin, a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol. Research subjects also had increases in the number of lymphocytes, white blood cells that are part of the immune system (The New York Times; September 20, 2010).

"Massage therapy is a proven component in the continuum of health and wellness and we encourage everyone to come in to one of our locations to experience a rejuvenating professional massage for themselves," said Myer.
