The two metals are similar in electronic configuration, and both have active-passive behaviors in aqueous solutions, so Ghali (mining, metallurgy, and materials engineering, Laval U., Quebec) feels justified in teaching them together, even though the mechanisms of passivity are different. This textbook is based on his one-semester graduate course on the corrosion of their alloys. He begins by introducing the fundamentals of corrosion science, then describes the engineering performance and corrosion resistance first of aluminum and its alloys, then of magnesium and its alloys. There being no accepted standard for defining corrosion forms and types in aqueous media, he uses an arbitrary one inspired from recent literature.
