Coronet crowned at Ascot.

CORONET (9-1) was crowned at Royal Ascot 2017 with a superb lastgasp victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes.

Under French ace Olivier Peslier, John Gosden's daughter of Dubawi just got up to deny 2-1 favourite Mori on the line to score by a neck in the Group Two contest on day three of the Royal meeting.

Mori, who was bidding to give trainer Sir Michael Stoute a record 76th winner at the Royal meeting, appeared to be ready to strike under Pat Smullen, having gone past Hertford Dancer (16-1) at the finish. But Coronet swooped down the outside to score by a neck, with Hertford Dancer a length back in third Silvestre de Sousa sent The Sky Is Blazing to the front and was 10 lengths ahead of the field turning for home in the 1m4f contest.

Chris Royal five preview predictions See Horse When he began to tomorrow's ECHO toil Hertford Dancer came through to take over in the final furlong, while at the back the well-fancied Irish raider Naughty Or Nice had to be pulled up by Declan McDonough after he lost his irons and couldn't carry on riding.

Up front Mori - who is by Frankel out of Midday - looked to have timed her challenge to perfection. But she had no answer to Coronet's late thrust.

Gosden, who also saddled the third Hertford Dancer, was pleased with both and happy to land his first winner of the week at Royal Ascot.

He said: "That was great. There was a strong pace and it was a great test of a mile and a half.

"I thought Hertford Dancer had the race won. She'd been close enough to the pace, but she ran a great race and was ridden well.

"I told Olivier his filly would come on strong late. I thought Mori was going to win and then Olivier came and grabbed her. It was a great run from Coronet. She ran in the Oaks and liked the uphill but not the downhill. It was a high-class race today."

Along with Epsom Oaks heroine Enable, Gosden has some talented three-year-old fillies and the trainer said: "We've got some very nice fillies. Enable will go for the Irish Oaks then the Yorkshire Oaks.

WRIGHT's Ascot day and Power in When asked if Coronet could step up in trip and bid for the St Leger, Gosden added: "She will get further than a mile and a half. The owner is quite game but I'll have to discuss it with him. I'll put her in the Park Hill Stakes and the other one (St Leger), but I will talk to the owner first."
