Cops win secret row.

THE PSNI has been forced to back down over its demand that officers must declare membership of secret organisations, it emerged yesterday.

Chief Constable Hugh Orde had told his officers they must comply with the Registration of Notifiable Memberships as recommended in the Patten Report.

But he has been forced to think again after civil actions by two officers and the Masonic Order - one of the organisations listed - were settled out of court.

Officers were also told that the 4,500 notification forms which they had completed and returned would remain sealed and would be destroyed unread.
