Coors `gives a dime' for Virginia Literacy

For the second year in a row, Coors Brewing Co. has announced plans to raise $100,000 during June to help combat illiteracy in the state of Virginia.

For every case of Coors, Coors Extra Gold and Coors Light sold statewide in June, 10 cents will be donated to the Virginia Literacy Foundation (VLF) and matched by Coors' Shenandoah Brewery. The funds raised will be used to help the more than 670,000 functionally illiterate adults living in Virginia, more than 18 percent of the population.

"Our efforts last year raised $100,000 for the foundation," said Phyllis Coors, wife of William Coors, chairman and president, Adolph Coors Co. "We are proud that our local Coors distributors have chosen to repeat the program to help such an effective organization."

The VLF, founded by former First Lady of Virginia Jeannie Baliles, is a non-profit organization that coordinates and facilitates Virginia's volunteer, community and business literacy efforts and serves as a grantor to private sector literacy groups.

Earlier this year, the Coors Foundation for Family Literacy was formed, and a five-year, $40-million national effort was launched to fight illiteracy. The mission of this effort is to support grass roots organizations, heighten public awareness and raise funds for literacy.
