Cool Joe has Bath sizzling; RUGBY UNION.

Byline: GARY FITZGERALD

WASPS 19 BATH 35 JOE Maddock's stunning hattrick put Bath in pole position to grab the crucial fourth play-off spot.

But it was England reject Olly Barkley who was the mastermind for this victory which dented Wasps' own chances of being involved in the end-of-season games.

The centre amassed 14 points including a try and had a hand in virtually every Bath attack, leaving the home team devastated.

For Wasps had hoped to celebrate in front of a 60,208 crowd at Twickenham in style. Instead, they played second fiddle while Bath burned up the famous turf and made hay in the sun.

Wasps pressurised the Bath line in the opening 10 minutes and were rewarded with a 6-0 lead.

Danny Cipriani, in sublime kicking form recently, made no mistakes with two penalties in front of the posts. Unfortunately for Wasps all it did was wake the sleepy Bath dragon.

The visitors joined in by going on their own rampage up field - and amassed 18 points without reply in a stunning turnaround.

Both tries were scored by the flying Maddock. The wing finishing off a superb breakaway Bath move in the left-hand corner.

Team-mate Nick Abendanon could have scored himself - passing out wide to Maddock with a clear run at the line.

Barkley converted for a 10-6 lead having already kicked a penalty. His second penalty stretched that advantage as Bath upped the pace and power. They continued pushing Wasps back on their heels and Maddock popped up on the right next time to grab his second try.

Bath were reduced to 14 when fullback Abendanon was sin-binned for a bodycheck on Tom Varndell when Wasps broke down the left.

Cipriani found his target with a penalty as Bath went in 18-9 up at half-time.

Cipriani cut the deficit to six points with his fourth penalty only to become the villain with a wayward pass which killed his side.

One of his long passes out wide was intercepted by Maddock who juggled the ball before jogging over.

It knocked the stuffing out of Wasps and Cipriani was removed from the action. Barkley then broke through for the fourth try. He converted and kicked another penalty. Ben Jacobs scored a late consolation for Wasps.

WASPS: Tries: Jacobs. Cons: Walder.

Pens: Cipriani 4. BATH: Tries: Maddock 3, Barkley. Cons: Barkley 3.
