Cook named MVP.

Elmira junior pitcher Alicia Cook was named the Class 3A softball player of the year after compiling a 23-0 record and leading the Falcons to the state championship with a 1-0 victory over Baker.


Elmira coach Pam Cook, Alicia's mother, was chosen as the 3A coach of the year. Two other Falcon players earned first-team all-state honors - senior catcher Kasey Sconce and sophomore infielder Andrea Sconce.

Three other local players were chosen to the first team - Marist junior infielder Shannon Stacy, Marist junior outfielder Amy Perkins and Taft sophomore pitcher Ashley Birdsong.

Churchill senior catcher Jodi Parmer was the lone Midwestern League player chosen first-team all-state in the 4A ranks.

Westview junior pitcher Amy Walters and Southridge junior infielder Ashley Charters shared 4A player of the year honors, and Sprague's Brad Soto was named 4A coach of the year.

In Class 2A/1A, senior pitcher Katie Plumb, senior infielder Melissa Cool, senior utility player Dani Davisson and junior outfielder Dani Taylor all represented North Douglas on the first team.

The other local first-team all-state selections were Monroe senior catcher Kim Fielder, Reedsport junior outfielder Jennifer Godinez, Jefferson senior outfielder Amanda Kamiade and Jefferson senior infielder Heidi Baker.

Dayton's Cagney Ringnalda, a senior pitcher, was named player of the year, and Willamina's Ron Caligure was chosen as coach of the year.

Challengers take over first after sweep

The Eugene Challengers swept into first place in the Area 4 American Legion standings with an 8-1, 7-5 sweep of the Medford Mustangs on Tuesday at Swede Johnson Stadium.

Eugene improved to 19-4 overall with the sweep, and 5-1 in Area 4, one game ahead of Medford (24-3, 4-2 Area 4).

Cody Newell tossed a complete-game four-hitter in the opener, striking out eight, and A.J. Norris drove in three runs. Corey Kent added three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Challengers.

James Mannion hit a pair of solo homers in the second game to pace the Challengers, and Kent drove in two runs. Sean Mascolo earned the victory, pitching five shutout innings.

Albany sweeps pair

from Emerald Valley

ALBANY - Emerald Valley took the early lead in the opener, but that was as good as it got as the Titans were swept by the Les Schwab Rockets, 9-6 and 12-4, in an Area 3 doubleheader.

Brian Barley hit a solo home run and drove in a pair of runs in the opener, and Barley and Bryan Hanson had two hits apiece for Emerald Valley (15-7, 2-4 Area 3) in the second game.

Vest's back nine gives him Oregon Open lead

WEST LINN - Tracy Vest, the assistant pro at the host Oregon Golf Club, fired a 31 on the back nine to take a two-stroke lead in the Oregon Open Invitational on Tuesday.

Vest shot a 4-under-par 68 on Tuesday and is at 8-under 136 overall. Jeff Coston shot a 71 to move into second place with a 138.

Jimmy White of Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell is in ninth place, shooting a 77 to finish at 1-over 145.
