Cook denies murder.
Byline: NOOR TOORANIA COOK who repeatedly stabbed his boss after an argument appeared in court for the first time yesterday and denied attempted murder.
The 27-year-old Yemeni claimed he was acting in self-defence when he stabbed his Bahraini employer twice in the head, once in the waist and once in the back in August 2008.
He admitted attacking his boss when he appeared in the High Criminal Court, but claimed the Bahraini provoked him by shoving him and spitting in his face.
The defendant had worked at the restaurant of his alleged victim, who survived the attack, for three years as an assistant cook, according to court documents.
However, the pair had a row over the Yemeni's visa after the restaurant shut down.
The Bahraini had reportedly agreed to sanction the transfer of his visa to a second restaurant, but only if he paid him BD1,400.
Problems started when the Bahraini allegedly demanded an additional BD400 from the Yemeni when he decided to work for a third company instead.
The sponsor allegedly seized the Yemeni's passport and refused to hand it back until he paid up.
During questioning, the Yemeni told police that he decided to get rid of the Bahraini by killing him after getting his passport back.
He purchased a knife from a cold store in Riffa and, after refusing to hand over additional money to his sponsor, the pair got into a brawl.
He claimed the Bahraini threatened to have police lock him up for 45 days if he didn't pay, then shoved him aside and spat in his face.
That is when the defendant stabbed him and fled.
"I went to make amends between us, but he insulted me and shoved me aside before spitting in my face," the Yemeni told the court yesterday.
"So I took the knife from my pocket and attacked him, but I was acting in self-defence and I didn't intend to kill him."
Judges adjourned the trial until March 15 to appoint a lawyer for the Yemeni.
