Convert pain into gain.

India, April 8 -- Where medicine fails, meditation works. We have been told through the ages that meditation keeps one fit and hence one can hope to live better and longer. This is all the more relevant today as mankind is afflicted with new and deadlier diseases and tension-free life is almost missing.

Sant Rajinder Singh stresses this point beautifully in his book Silken Thread of the Divine. He quotes an amusing saying regarding the health of the physical body. And the saying goes that the loss of health results in four things: the first is getting ill, the second is pill; the third is bill and the forth case, in some cases, is the loss of will.

The Sant adds a fifth one, 'still'. 'Still' here refers to meditation that can help one bid good-bye to ill, pill and bill but regain one's lost will. The basic doctrine is that there is a mind-body connection. Mental illness under stress leads to physical immunity dropping down to an extent that one falls prey to various kinds of ailments.

Meditation is the magic that helps you avoid stress and depression. A study done by Canadian psychiatrist Dr. John L. Craven, says "controlled studies have found consistent reduction in anxiety in meditators. Improvements were found during clinical trials of meditation in cases of hypertension, insomnia, asthma, chronic pain, deep cardiac problems and phobic anxiety."

Similar results were found when famous psychiatrist Dr Ilan Kutz studied on the benefits of meditation. "As the ability to meditate develops, a hierarchy of sensation develops, ranging from deep relaxation to marked emotional and cognitive alterations... many of these peripheral physiological changes are compatible with decrease arousal of the sympathetic nervous system..."

How does it work? By becoming absorbed within, you can divert your attention from the pain of being ill. In near death experiences, people who underwent excruciatingly painful accidents were lifted above pain when they left the bodies. With their return to the bodies, they had this message to report: that their pain ended when they entered a world of light. In other words, one can rise above physical pain and problems by connecting with the power within.

The essential point is that one must believe that there is a healing power of the Divine that we can tap into when we shift our consciousness from the physical body to the spiritual side. Pain gets converted into gain and life becomes worthy of living and appreciating.
