Convergence of animal health and research par excellence.

ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (NIVEDI), is a pioneer research institute in Veterinary epidemiology carrying out livestock disease surveillance, monitoring and analysis in India through its 32 collaborative centres located in different states of the country. The centralised administrative cum laboratory of the institute is located in a sprawling campus at Yelahanka, Bengaluru.

The institute made a humble beginning in VIth five-year plan as All India Coordinated Research Project on Animal Disease Monitoring and Surveillance (AICRPADMAS), became fully functional during the last quarter of 1987 with establishment of four Regional Research Units (RRUs) at Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ludhiana. In VIIth plan, the institute was strengthened with support of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and European Union by giving the responsibility of National Project on Rinderpest Eradication (NPRE) involving participation of 32 state level diagnostic/disease investigation laboratories. On 1st April '2000 (during IXth plan) realizing the impact of ADMAS on livestock health, the project was given the status of an independent institute 'Project Directorate on Animal Disease Monitoring and Surveillance (PD on ADMAS)' with ten collaborating units. In Xth and XIIth National plan, Guwahati (Assam) centre and five more collaborating units were added providing impetus to a nationwide animal disease monitoring and surveillance.

Considering the contributions made by the directorate to country's livestock health sector, the council upgraded PD on ADMAS to a National institute and rechristened as 'National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (NIVEDI)' on 26th October '2013 at Bengaluru. On 9th January'2015, NIVEDI's newly constructed administration building and Biosafety Laboratory (BSL2) was dedicated to nation by Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Hon'ble Union Minister for Agriculture in presence of Shri D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Hon'ble Minister of Law and Justice and Shri T. B. Jayachandra, Hon'ble Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislation and Animal Husbandry, Govt, of Karnataka; Shri Appaji Nadagouda and Shri S. R. Vishwanath, Members of Legislative Assembly, Karnataka; Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary DARE and Director General, ICAR and Dr. K.M. L. Pathak, Deputy Director General (AS), ICAR.

NIVEDI presently under aegis of ICAR with 32 All India coordinating units is focused on research and development in livestock disease epidemiology, forewarning, forecasting, surveillance, monitoring and informatics, understanding infectious disease ecology, on-site diagnosis and strategic control technologies considering climate change and globalisation including zoonoses. Animal disease economics, risk assessment and health care measures for disease control are its areas of concern for the institute.

NIVEDI has a National Livestock Serum Repository with collection of livestock serum samples collected over the years and stored forming basis for sero-epidemiological studies especially for the retrospective analysis of new and emerging diseases. The institute plays a pivotal role in imparting training to scientists and Veterinary professionals working in different fields of animal health in modem laboratories techniques, epidemiological investigations, NADRES software, EpiInfo software, epidemiological analysis for forecasting of livestock diseases, etc. The institute is also coordinating various other training programmes in colloboration with ICAR, DADF, DBT, DST, CDC-USA, USDA and FAO.

NIVEDI has established memorandum of understanding (MoU) with various universities/ organization for post graduate research and education. Collaborative research and faculty training and resource exchange are also priority areas of the institute.

NIVEDI has undertaken several internal and external funded R&D projects in the field of epidemiology, diagnostics, socio-economic and modeling of economically important diseases including zoonoses. Till date, 24 institute, eight inter-institute collaborative, 30 external funded and four PPP mode consultancy research projects has been taken up from different agencies like ICAR, DADF, DBT, DST, CDC-USA, ILRI, Pfizer, Zoetis, MSD, etc.,

India.admas Epitrak, a user friendly offline software for analyzing animal health information on animal disease monitoring and surveillance epidemiology tracking has been developed by NIVEDI and is included in the curriculum of under graduate students by Veterinary Council of India (VCI). National Animal Disease Referral Expert System-NADRES ( fully functional web based dynamic interactive module for livestock disease relational database supported by Geographic Information System (GIS) useful for field Veterinarians, administrators, technocrats, research personnel, farmers, veterinary colleges and students for forecasting of livestock diseases is an outcome of efforts of NIVEDI.

NIVEDI has also been in the forefront of developments of onsite diagnostic kits for detection of livestock diseases viz Avidin-Biotin ELISA Kits for Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis and Bovine Brucellosis (OIE evaluated and approved by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna); Indirect ELISA kit for caprine and ovine brucellosis (Patent No 250709); Protein-G based indirect ELISA kit for bovine brucellosis; Leptospira silver staining kit; Lateral flow assay (LAT) for Brucellosis; Recombinant antigen and its Monoclonal antibody based Competitive Inhibition-ELISA detection of T. evansi antibodies in animals and Double antibody sandwich ELISA for detection of T. evansi antigen in animals.

ICAR-NIVEDI (PD on ADMAS) played a pivotal role in the rinderpest eradication programme through National Programme on Rinderpest Eradication (NPRE) by undertaking surveillance and monitoring of Rinderpest during the surveillance stage of disease eradication. The institute is also playing programme leader role in National Control programme on Brucellosis (BCP) by providing diagnostic kits, monitoring, imparting the sensitization training, etc. The institute is playing a critical role in providing estimation of economic impact of the diseases namely, FMD, PPR, etc. ICAR-NIVEDI has been bestowed with ICAR Awards for Team Research (1999-2000), Lai Bahadur Shastri Young Scientist Award (1999-2000), Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award (2001), DBT Biotech Product Process Development and Commercialization Award (2002), OIE Meritorious Award (2002), FAO Gold Medal for Outstanding contribution to global rinderpest eradication programme (2011), ISO9001: 2008 Certification (2014) and many more national and international awards and recognitions.

Currently, NIVEDI under the visionary leadership of Dr. H. Rahman, extraordinary support of the ICAR, well trained scientific/technical staff and with constant support of administration is working tirelessly towards becoming a lead centre for SAARC/South ASIAN countries in the area of livestock population health with continued efforts to strive forwards in achieving excellence in animal health. NIVEDI owes its leadership to the opulence journey of achievements commemorated by the efforts of the Directors and professional of NIVEDI and PD on ADMAS and the support of visionaries who dreamt of this excellence in Animal Health Research.

We acknowledge the support of Dr. H. Rahman, Director, ICAR-NIVEDI for sharing and compilation of information.
