Contractor loves musical side job.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Local brass musician Warren Wellford has turned his love of music into a side job that he hopes to make into a full-time endeavor eventually.

Wellford, owner of Blue Ridge Music at 3524 Main St., also owns a construction company and spends most of his time doing remodeling jobs. But it's the hours he spends at Blue Ridge that are really special to him.

"My other job puts food on the table," Wellford said. "But sometimes when I come in here, I just say `ahhh."

Welford's music shop - which sells band and orchestra accessories, guitar strings and other various supplies, and also has instruments for rent - shares a building with Klassen Repair, where owner Karl Klassen offers instrument repair services.

The space is owned by Brenda Olson, who besides owning a neighboring pet grooming business is Wellford's fiancee.

Wellford, a Virginia native who moved to Eugene in 1979, hopes to someday move his shop from its mid-Springfield location into a more high-profile area.

"This is just temporary," he said. "I know as we grow, our customer base will do the same.

"Eventually, I'd like to move into downtown Springfield."

Wellford sat down last week for a question-and-answer session on his business:

How long have you been in Springfield? "The business opened in September of 2005, right after Light's (Music Center) closed in Eugene."

How many employees do you have? "It's just the two of us (Wellford and Klassen). If we're both gone, Brenda covers for us."

What is the biggest challenge facing your business? "Balancing work hours here and at my construction company, and making everyone happy at both ends."

What part of your work do you like best? "I like dealing with customers, and seeing kids' excitement when a new instrument is placed in their hands. It reminds me of when I was their age and did the same thing."

Who are your typical customers? "It's a broad range. We get beginning students, advanced college players - a full spectrum of musicians."

Blue Ridge Music is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday by appointment.

Reach the shop by phone at 746-7804.
