Contraceptives campaigners claim tax win ahead of Budget.

CAMPAIGNERS claimed victory yesterday in their battle to slash the tax on condoms and other contraceptives such as the morning-after pill.

The Treasury remained tight-lipped about a report that VAT would be cut from 17.5% to 5% in Gordon Brown's Budget later this month.

But Supercargo said a 10-month push to cut the prices of condoms as part of a concerted bid to cut teenage pregnancies and sexuallytransmitted diseases had ended in victory.

The high street health and beauty chain cut the VAT from the cost of its own brand condoms last year.

Managing director Euan Sutherland said: "We are delighted that the Treasury has heeded our calls to make a change in the VAT rules.

"The VAT rules do not make sense and this is just the first of a series of challenges we will mount to ensure our customers don't pay a luxury tax on the items we know are real essentials."

The firm had already been told that the move was "a genuine possibility" after collecting 20,000 signatures on a petition.
