ARLINGTON, Va.--Video unit sales to dealers got off to a strong start this year, according to the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association. January A-V sales gained 2 percent overall compared with the month in 1995.

TV/VCR combination sets, projection TVs and VCR decks had the highest growth of all categories. Shipments of large-screen, direct-view color TVs and projection TVs have continued to climb. Projection TV shipments to dealers increased 29 percent last month. Shipments of models 55 inches and larger rose 70 percent. CEMA expects dollar sales of projection TVs to top $1.7 billion this year, a 17 percent increase over 1995.

Shipments of VCR decks jumped 19 percent in January. Monaural models rose to 540,000 units, up 20 percent from last year, while dealers purchased 18 percent more stereo VCRs.

TV/VCR shipments to dealers rose 30 percent in January. In the mid-and large-screen segments, sales to dealers were up 43 percent. CEMA projects TV/VCR sales to exceed $800 million at the end of the year.

January direct-view TV unit sales fell 9 percent. The 19-inch and 20-inch segments dropped by more than one-fourth from January 1995; however, sales of models 25 inches and larger were up a 5 percent.

With the summer Olympics and presidential elections, a combination that has historically prompted high consumer spending on electronics, CEMA projects sales of direct-view TVs to surpass the $7 billion mark this year.
