Construction to begin on co-owned Geisinger St. Luke's Hospital near Orwigsburg.

Byline: Wendy Solomon

The hospital will operate as a joint venture between Geisinger Health System, headquartered in Danville, Montour County, and St. Luke's University Health System, based in Fountain Hill.

The arrangement, announced in March, marks the first time two health systems in Pennsylvania have agreed to build and co-own a new hospital.

Both health systems will contribute physicians and specialty support staff.

St. Luke's will build and manage the new 80-bed hospital, which includes an emergency department and a full range of specialties and services.

The hospital is expected to open in late 2019.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Thursday for the three-story, 120,000-square-foot hospital on Paramount Boulevard off Route 61 in West Brunswick Township near Orwigsburg.

"The new hospital in Orwigsburg will emphasize the strengths of St. Luke's and Geisinger to more residents of Schuylkill County and surrounding areas," Richard A. Anderson, president and CEO of St. Luke's, said in a statement.

Dr. David T. Feinberg, president and CEO of Geisinger, cited the convenience of the new hospital and health care services, saying that many patients leave Schuylkill and Berks counties for treatment.

Both health systems, which have a variety of health care facilities in the region, have been collaborating on a number of ventures since 2016 when St. Luke's partnered with Geisinger's employee health insurance plan.

On July 1, Geisinger began providing its Life Flight emergency medical air transportation for the entire St. Luke's system.

St. Luke's has owned the 44-bed St. Luke's Miners Campus in Coaldale since 2000. And in nearby Hamburg, Berks County, it operates a walk-in care center, primary care office, physical therapy office and a lab.

Geisinger has an outpatient clinic in Orwigsburg and primary care and primary care and specialty services, including outpatient surgery and radiation oncology in Pottsville, Frackville and Mahanoy City.View the full article from Lehigh Valley Business at http://www.lvb.com/article/20180709/LVB01/180709891/construction-to-begin-on-coowned-geisinger-st-lukes-hospital-near-orwigsburg.
