This interdisciplinary collection of essays describes the relatively new field of research that analyzes translation as a socially regulated activity. Drawing on theory from such as Bourdieu, Latour, Lahire, Giddens and Luhmann, contributors use sociological methodologies to question established categories of thought and redefine principles. Contributors address the debate on the translator's position in an emerging sociology of translation, including perceptions of the profession and personal investment, Bourdieu's influence in conceptualizing a sociology of translation, including re-evaluation of Bourdieu's thought itself, current issues, and the location of translation between Bourdieu and Bhabha, issues of methods and translation practice, including locating systems and individuals and creating bridge concepts, and constructing a sociology of translation studies, including placing method in context and finding a place for the new discipline. Nine of the 11 articles are in English; two are in French.
