Constructing a new image.
A major initiative has been launched to help the construction industry in the region change tack.
Driving image change by improving performance, and maximising wealth creation to achieve a profitable future for the sector are the key objectives of newly formed industry body Constructing Excellence in the North East.
Catriona Lingwood, centre manager for Constructing Excellence in the North East said: "The North-east construction industry has the potential to become a world leader. But to do so it must address sector issues and continue to implement changes in order to realise maximum value for all clients through the provision of high quality services.
"This will enhance the image of the industry as a whole with the ultimate result of wealth generation for itself and its clients.
"Constructing Excellence in the North East will provide the advice and tactics for firms of all sizes across the supply chain to achieve this vision."
To provide support and continue to identify innovations to bring about sustainable development of the industry, the new body will be organised into four programmes - Innovation, Productivity, Best Practice and Engagement.
As part of its structure, Constructing Excellence in the North East will continue to support a number of existing initiatives and will liaise with a number of key sector groups including The Housing Forum, Local Government Task Force and The Movement for Innovation (M4I).
Constructing Excellence in the North East will be officially launched at a dinner attended by Constructing Excellence chief executive Professor Dennis Lenard at the Marriott Gosforth Park on May 27.
Construction Minister Nigel Griffiths welcomed the organisation's strategy, saying: "The UK has the potential to outperform its peers and create a world class construction industry.
"Already we have much to be proud of - construction contributes about 9pc to our gross domestic product and is a backbone of British industry. Yet there is work to be done.
"Constructing Excellence in the North East has a clear and future-facing agenda that will propel this industry forward and deliver the change that is needed to generate better profitability, better predictability on time and cost, and a safer, more efficient industry to benefit all."
