Consortium awaits decision.

SIR - I read with interest the article (The Western Mail, November 21) regarding the T5 terminal building at Heathrow and its effect on the Severnside airport proposal.

The Government has forecast that the throughput of passengers through reporting UK airports will double to about 400 million in 20 years and that T5 is only phase one of a development programme of which SIA is merely another part.

The A380 large capacity aeroplane, capable of carrying up to 800 people, will come into service in 2007. Since 1998 SIA has worked closely with Airbus Industrie to develop an airport capable of handling this aeroplane - as yet the only airport in the world capable of doing so is Hong Kong.

SIA, which has a planned capacity of 30 million, will be in operation in 2007 when the A380 comes into service. When the airport is complete it will provide an estimated 30,000 jobs.

Considerable interest in the project has come from businesses throughout the world and companies await advice on when the concept will become a reality so that negotiations can proceed for their participation in the project.

The consortium promoting the project will shortly have all details complete for a planning application and now only awaits the appropriate legislation to ensure a more reasonable time period for a decision than was taken for the T5 application.
