Conscience calls.

As I sat watching Oprah Winfrey's tour of the Gulf Coast, the one question that burned in my heart was "What can I do to help my people?" In your August 2005 issue, you featured a group called NGAAP founded by Darryl Lester and Athan Lindsay (America's Leading Black Philanthropists"). I have the great fortune of knowing these two brothers personally. They really light the philanthropic fire that we all have inside.

My fire was intensified while seeing and hearing all the horrible stories from the Gulf region. Most people think it only takes money to help but we all have the three Ts--time, talent, and treasure. If you have seen the same things on the news that I have seen, I implore you to follow that tugging in your heart to do something. Seek out places to volunteer your time, find ways to use your talents to help others, and donate back a portion of what God has given you.

While watching Oprah's show, my head began to spin trying to figure out what to do. With the help of some great friends and my nonprofit organization, we have been collecting toys for the children who arrived in Raleigh, North Carolina, from the Gulf region. All it took was for us to find a location and set up a table. People want to help. Create avenues through which they can participate. Follow your heart!
